It is generally agreed that Holguin Province is where Columbus first anchored, and he deemed these shores the most beautiful he had ever seen; visitors from around the world have been having a similar reaction ever since. This is rich agricultural country. The heart of Cuba’s bean, corn, coffee and sugarcane harvest is here, as well as nickel, iron and cobalt.
This region also has political significance as Fidel’s childhood home is located in Biran, a musket shot from Columbus’ original landing site. The locals have dubbed Holguin ‘the city of parks,’ and you’ll find at least six in the city center and many more as you move into the outskirts. Like all Spanish towns, there is a central square, where the locals congregate to talk politics and gossip under the shade of two stunning cathedrals.
Just north of the city is the Hill of the Cross, worth the hike if just for the breathtaking view of the town below. Another 50 km northeast is the resort town of Guardalavaca with its fine beaches, warm water and colourful scuba sites.
