The story of the Bahamas reads like a great swashbuckling Robert Louis Stevenson novel with lots of ‘ahoy mateys,’ ‘arghs,’ ‘shiver me timbers’ and—well, you get the idea. A good measure of a nation’s coolness factor can be found in the music it generates, and in this arena the Bahamas is in a league of its own. Junkanoo, goombay and rake ‘n scrape are all deeply rooted in West African dance music and the drumbeats that resonate through all three of these musical styles is like a primordial heartbeat that pervades the land. The annual Junkanoo Festival is a national holiday attracting dancing and musical teams, called shacks, from across this island nation. Traditional rake ‘n scrape instruments include a carpenter’s saw, a goatskin drum and an accordion; the sound is pure Bahamian bliss.
Nassau is the island’s capital and is its cultural and economic hub. Evidence of its colourful history is told through the voice of colonial mansions, 18th century fortresses, large manors and the Queen’s Staircase, which leads to a breathtaking view of this island paradise.
