The city of Santa Clara has historical significance, both with respect to the overthrow of Batista and his army of 3,000 by Ché and a force of 300, and in the drama and saber rattling of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Monuments can be found to mark both of these events within the city of Santa Clara as well as a fine university, a theatre, a large park with a bandstand where local musicians will often entertain for free and a few museums.
Much more worthy of a visit during the Canadian winter are the beaches and coves that blossom from the tranquil waters of this reef-protected region of the Atlantic and create a timeless oasis for enjoying the finer things in life like snorkeling, swimming, kayaking and lounging under a shady palapa with a good read and a cold drink. Scuba divers will find some interesting underwater sites to explore including a rich mixture of colourful sea life and a few sunken wrecks.
