Varadero is to beaches what Wayne Gretzky is to hockey, Rolls Royce is to luxury cars and Biltmore is to hats: it is quite simply the best. Varadero has those long, white powder sand beaches that stretch out to the limits of your imagination and beyond. The beaches are shaded with tall, coconut-laden palm tress and the city of Varadero has a nice collection of restaurants, shops and bars.
The Hicacos peninsula, where Varadero is located, takes its name from a local spiny cactus, is 21km long, with a nearly continuous broad band of fine white sand fronting a clear blue sea. Backed by mangroves and the calm waters of Cárdenas Bay, it measures less than a mile at its widest point.
The nearby cities of Cárdenas and Matanzas—the provincial capital—are known for their art, history and culture. Southwest of Varadero, on the province's Caribbean coast, is the Zapata Peninsula, famous for its ecotourism and rich history.
